About the Business
The Steven James trilogy of salons in Canterbury and Faversham is the culmination of no less than five generations of hairdressers! The dynasty began in 1908 when Henry Flower opened a barber's shop in Palace Street, Canterbury. As a result of Henry's sporadic disappearances (he liked a drink and would sometimes disappear for days on end!), his wife Charity began to learn the business and eventually became established as the first female barber in the country! Henry & Charity had two sons, Ernest and Bertram, who set up their own shops in North Lane, Canterbury. Bertram's son, also named Bertram, followed into the business. In 1962 Bertram Jr's son Jim began to work with his father, and opened his current salon in 1985, naming it Steven James after his own sons. The Flower dynasty continues with sons Steven and James both owning their own salons in Canterbury and Faversham respectively.
